"Not all men are menaces to women, but all women have been menaced by men"
http://www.upworthy.com/10-tweets-of-greatness-from-a-guy-on-what-women-shouldnt-have-to-deal-with?c=ufb1
This popped up on Facebook this morning and I thought it was very interesting and true; this was something that came up in our own class quite often (think Men's Rights).
Here are the tweets that I think said it best:
"Remember dudes: If a woman says something and you wish or threaten violence on her for it, you're the problem."
"Also, dudes: If another guy you know is threatening women with violence and you let it slide, you're also the problem."
"And for everyone rushing to add "and the other direction too" -- you know what, it's IMPORTANT to note men do that shit MORE. The rush to make it an equal-opportunity warning elides the fact men pull this crap more. As a man, I am speaking to men here."
I was so happy to see that last point being made; it was very well put. Yes, no one should be violent to anyone else. But, statistically, men are more violent, more often, to women as well as each other. By not recognizing that fact, it diminishes the problem.
I also think that this holds true with many other things -- beauty standards and body image, to name some examples off the top of my head. Yes, men do struggle with these things as well, but it's no where near the level of seriousness/frequency that women do, and by implying that both sexes face these issues in a similar fashion only serves to belittle and normalize the extent to which women suffer.

It makes sense to me that people are friends with those who are at least somewhat similar to them, and someone's friend group reflects upon them. I cannot wrap my mind around how some men can pretend to have certain values but stand by as those around them hurt others.
ReplyDeleteThis is really interesting and I love how it says "as a man, I am speaking to men here..", which is a big thing because men tend to ignore lecture because they assume girls are just venting.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate how he seems to be calling out those who like to blame all parties involved. He seems to just be cutting through that crap to insist that men who react in a certain way are the problem in themselves.
