This year I decided to become a commuter. My twin and I share a car however we do not go to the same University, so I was left to take the Metro Link (public transportation) everyday. In the mornings and especially late at night, multiple men would always come up to me and say vulgar things to me and degrade me in front of those on the train. It got so bad, that now I have my parents take me to school at 6am before they go to work.
I am not familiar about "Feminism," however, in some way, I feel as if this relates completely.
This definitely seems like a problem associated with the feminist movement.
ReplyDeleteI definitely think that this relates to feminism, because sexual harassment is major societal problem.
ReplyDeleteI think that you shouldn't be afraid when taking the Metro Link in Missouri. I have taken and will take the train whenever my car is not working. Usually, early morning commute does not have those types of individual who are all in your face type of people. People are usually going to work or school like you. When you ride be aware of your surrounding. Stick earplugs in your ear, not loud, or even on, just to let people know you don't want to be bothered, because not only men will try to engage you in unwonted conversation. Also sit on the train where the conductor is so that if you need assistance someone is and will help you. Only you know your comfort level so I am in no way trying to say you overreacted. These are just thing that help me when riding the train in Missouri and I probably stopped at stations that you would never stop at. Hope it help just in cause your parents can't take you one day. Be strong.
ReplyDeleteI actually just did a research project this last semester that dealt briefly with the social acceptability of sexual harassment and its relation to the esteem that the society as a whole holds women in. As you probably could've guessed, it appears to be much more wildly accepted in cultures that devalue women, so it is disappointing but not surprising that this is still very prevalent in American society today.
ReplyDeleteThis does sound like a feminist problem to me, sexual harassment seems to be an issue all across the country. Be safe and don't let people degrade you.
ReplyDeleteCat calling is not just common but entirely acceptable in some cultures like Italy. I personally do not think it is acceptable at all and women don't need to be sexually harassed or even 'complimented' by random strangers.
