I happened upon this article that Gloria Steinem wrote, and I thought it
was so interesting and hilarious. A women's menstrual cycle is something
that is so often used against her, but Steinem argues that if men were the ones
who menstruated things would be much different. It would be enviable.
Boys would have parties for "coming into their manhood." The
more severe a guy’s time of the month is, the more of a man he is. It
would be something to be proud of rather than something we are embarrassed of.
Menopause would be an accomplishment. It would signify that a man
had served his time, and he would have this societal badge of honor. This concept
was mind blowing to me, and the more I thought about it, the more truth I saw
in every word. A women’s menstrual cycle
is what sustains our population. It
should be celebrated, but instead we are taught to be quiet and embarrassed by
it. It was a very insightful article!
I really don't want to know what the male equivalent of a tampon is...

DeleteHaha, thanks for sharing this, you're right. I've never thought of it like that.. interesting i wonder if that would be true.
ReplyDeleteI think that this article brings up a very important point, that women are shamed for something that if men had would be celebrated. This article is also extremely relevant today the women without access to sanitary napkins and tampons are put at an disadvantage, they aren't able to go to school for a week every month and forced to stay home. This would never be the case if men menstruated, buying these products would be a necessity if it were the other way around.
ReplyDeleteThis article is definitely funny and I agree that girls tend to be quite, but I think that it is kind of changing and they are being open about it
ReplyDeleteThis is so interesting and so true. I feel like this is the fact for a lot of thing that happen to guys. It is cool for bodily functions to happen to them but embarrassing for girls which I think is unfair.
ReplyDeleteI love this piece, it reminds me of something else Gloria said: 'Honey, if men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament'
