The Daily Show on Wednesday had a piece on the double standard that federal policy has between men's and women's sexual health. While coverage for women's birth control is largely controversial and unavailable, drugs for erectile disfunction as well as penis pumps are accepted as necessary medical treatments.

The Daily Show, despite being a comedy program, is quite on point in this segment. Samantha Bee is hilarious and really exposes how ridiculous these medically exclusive policies are.
"Penis pumps save lives." I couldn't decide whether to grimace in horror or laugh until I cried. Yes there is absolutely a double standard, especially since birth control does not always have to do with sex (I personally take it for non-sexual reasons) while a penis pump is for sexual performance, no matter how anyone looks at it.
ReplyDeleteI love these kinds of shows that point out such blatant sexism and double standards. It is amazing that so much of the media has completely overlooked this.
ReplyDeleteI always think that satire is one of the best ways to point out the ridiculousness of oppressive institutions. It always seems like the reason double standards like this are allowed to persist is because the real issues associated with them are so hidden behind misleading political rhetoric. Satire is a great way to remove the rhetoric and expose what is really going on outside of the normal information channels that normalize oppressive systems.
