As I was reading this article, I kept going back to the Jessica Valenti quote: "It's not that I'm angry. It's that I'm exhausted". I look at articles like this, and I wonder how this happens in our society! Certainly if we are to the point of having female CEOs and the potential of a female president, we should be past the point of allowing up the skirt shots! There are so many things that upset me about the entire principle of this ruling. First off, societal pressures force women into wearing skirts and dresses, and now we are being punished for wearing them. Men are allowed to get sexual gratification by taking pictures up women's skirts and are not being punished for it. The other absolutely shocking portion of this article to me was that it was woman representing the man who was caught taking these pictures. I was completely appalled! Certainly she would not be okay with men taking pictures up her skirt! All in all, I find this shocking, disheartening, and very upsetting.
I don't even understand how this is really ok. This sounds like it is putting the blame solely on women because of what they choose to wear. Like you said, there is always this stigma on what women can and cannot wear, and this article alone proves it. It scares me to think how many people would try to take this out of context.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like a pretty blatant violation of privacy to me. Since images are spread so fast with technology like smartphones, these women could end up with their pictures everywhere without ever giving consent. All the talks they gave us in high school about being careful what you post seem a little frivolous in this light.
