For my visit to an art museum, I went to "Ridykeulous," a feminist, lesbian art exhibit at the Contemporary Art Museum. Unlike a lot of historical art museums and exhibits, I sought out a very different exhibit from our societal norm. This part of the exhibit showed an abundance of different forms of art including paintings, photographs, graffiti, letters, and even pieces of paper with, what looked like, thoughts or beliefs written on them. As this particular photo shows, a woman is saying "suck my dick," and a black penis is hanging off the photo. One of the photos showed a very graphic image of children that had been murdered, which said, "Q: And babies? A: And babies." Even a sheet of paper said, "Number of Law and Order episodes where the woman is the Victim" with over 200 tally marks. I loved how this exhibit was so different and empowering. It was refreshing to see a very different depiction of women, as well as see the thoughts of a female artist portrayed in her art so vividly. One of the most interesting things about the exhibit was not just the art itself but the general public reaction to it. It was interesting to see the difference between open-minded or feminist individuals compared to much more conservative-minded individuals, who would quickly rush out of the exhibit, snickering about the art they saw. But then again, I witnessed one man who brought his year old son in, saying that he needed to be introduced to this art because it is such an important concept that needs to be emphasized even at a young age.
Overall, I would recommend seeing this exhibit. It is very shocking and some of the images are difficult to swallow, but it is a empowering exhibit that has a fantastic message.
