Miles's post about the portrayal of abortion in the media reminded me a lot of an article I read in Cosmopolitan about abortion titled, "Our Choice: How Abortion Changed Our Relationship." This article follows four girls that got an abortion, their reason behind doing it, and how they felt afterwords.
First, I want to address some of the things I did not like about the articles. In all four cases, the man stuck with the woman in her decision to have an abortion, saying, "It is her choice and I will fully accept any decision that she has to make pertaining to abortion." I thought that that alone painted a very unrealistic picture of what happens in every case of abortion. I did not like how the article did not give several points of view from the male perspective, making it seem like the man was supportive in every instance.
Nevertheless, I really liked how the article explained not just the before but the after of how women felt following their abortion or why they chose to get it. For example, the first woman and her boyfriend she knew since childhood got an abortion because they were not ready. The second woman got an abortion because she never wanted children, felt guilty following her abortion, broke up with her boyfriend, and has now decided that she does want a child in the future when she is ready. The third woman got an abortion following a hook up with a guy she knew, which led to them becoming more serious about one another. The final woman and her husband got an abortion because they knew that their child would be born extremely ill with a mass on his/her neck. They were heartbroken yet ended up having another healthy baby in the end.
I think there is such a stigma in our society that women have abortions because they are selfish or "do not care about their baby's choice." Although I wish this article was told from multiple different perspectives, I think it does a good job showing that women should be allowed to make the choice to have an abortion or not and that every woman makes that choice for a completely different reason.
It is so true that abortion is considered to be a sin in our society. However, most people don't understand the difficulties some couples have to face and they take that decision for the future of their. It is important that our society don't come to a conclusion and understand the situation of why a women is proceeding towards the decision of abortion. At the end, its the women's choice not the society's
ReplyDeleteIt does sound like at least to some extent they did show that there can be people who are extremely unhappy after abortions. I have always been pro-choice, but I think that there needs to be constant conversation and education about abortion (which it sounds like this video did at least a bit, even if in a flawed way). Abortion should not become a norm in our society without people considering all their options, but it should always be an option.
ReplyDeleteI agree, that does seem a little unrealistic for all of the men to be supportive, but I love that each woman has a very different reason for getting an abortion. It's really important to have a more widespread understanding of abortion.
