Altas Event

I attended the ONE Campaign event for Atlas week. The ONE Campaign is an organization that is an activist campaign for aid to other countries in need. They do this by going to different college campuses and promoting their organization in hopes that that college will adopt a chapter at their school. SLU doesn't currently have a ONE group here, however I think it would be great it one was initiated. During this talk there were some facts that startled me. At the beginning is was kinda boring to be honest and was just he typical we need money to help children in starving countries, and it just has always seemed to me that how can I one person donating a couple dollars tops really make a change, but my mind was changed throughout this talk. The speaker told us that only about 1% of the US government budges actually goes to aid for other countries. That is an astonishingly low amount, and there is a bill that passed in the house a couple of weeks ago that made it so that more money would be allocated towards aid, however it is struggling to pass in the senate, so at the end of the talk the ladies who were running it had us all write a letter to the senator of Missouri to tell him that we would really appreciate if he would sponsor the bill and help it pass the senate. I thought this was a good way to take a message and campaign that people can be skeptical of sometimes and make it so that people could still feel they are participating and making a change without having to donate money. Overall this was a very good and inspirational talk.
