Atlas Event: Immigrant and Refugee Women's Program

I was an ambassador for Atlas Week. The first event I got to work at was presented by the Immigrant and Refugee Women's Program, a nonprofit organization here in St. Louis. Their mission is "to increase the independence and reduce the isolation of immigrant and refugee women by teaching them basic English and practical living skills in the security of their own homes." I thought this was such an incredible mission, as well as an important topic to discuss, especially following our class discussion about the oppression and violence that immigrant women can face because of that language barrier.

This organization is also on the list for doing service learning with them! I definitely want to push this organization for their fantastic cause since they only require 2 hours a week for about one semester, but one of the workers, Sarah, told me a lot of the volunteers end up sticking with the program. One thing that really stood out to me is how they really shape their program for each individual woman in order to help improve her English language skills at her own pace. The program also lasts as long as the woman wants it to, with some of the students preparing to enter community college! So if you have another class you need to do service learning with, the Immigrant and Refugee Women's Program is a fantastic organization. I am definitely excited to try volunteering for them and their cause once I graduate.

  1. This organization sounds like a great place to volunteer. I will definitely keep that in mind the next time that I need service learning hours.
