The Power of Spoken Word Poetry

We talk a lot about rape culture in this class: what it is, who perpetuates it, what effect it has, but the true question really is how do we get rid of rape culture?  Certainly we have to stop blaming the victim, but how do we get the masses of people who refuse to understand what sexual assault really is and why consent is crucial to change to understand? In this video, Guante chronicles this struggle in an incredibly true and personal way.  He expresses just how pervasive violence is in our conception of sex.  I did not even realize just how right he is until he states the words we use to describe it: banging, fucking, hitting, smashing.  He describes not wanting to talk to his friend about respecting women because of the bind of not wanting to ruin their friendship.

Yet, we are all complacent in sexual assault, even if we are just bystanders. I'm sure people may not watch every video posted on the blog, but if you get a chance, I highly recommend this one.
