The Voice
I am a huge fan of the show The Voice. While watching it tonight it occurred to me that the judging situation is a little uneven. There are three males judges and only one female judge. The judges change each season. Adam Leveine and Blake Shelton are on all the seasons, and then Usher and CeLo Green switch every other season, and Christina Aguliera and Shakira also switch every other season. No matter what season it is and what specific judges are on that season it is always only one girl judge. I think feminists would find this problematic because music is an industry where there are so many successful and inspirational singers of both genders, so it just doesn't make much sense to me as to why they can't have more of a diverse judging pool. I think the show would benefit from having another girl judge who could help the artist develop, especially other female vocalists who are looking for female inspiration and coaching, but maybe aren't the same style of singing as either Shakira or Christina.

It really is pretty amazing how these things show up in almost every facet of society. This really is a huge problem, and you're totally right about the need for a strong female role model. I do not watch the show, but I would be curious to see how the results are given and who has won in the past as far as gender is concerned.
ReplyDeleteI don't regularly watch the show, so this is something that I entirely missed! I think a lot of people don't think much about things like this, so the system is able to perpetuate itself.
