Body Types

This past week we discussed how girls are heavily oppressed due to their bodies. It is highly arguable that American society has created a very specific standard of beauty that is impossible for many women to adhere to. Such qualities as straight, blonde hair, or large breasts are things that a girl cannot control without investing a lot of money and changing, sometimes damaging, their body. Often overlooked, the guidelines that guys are expected to follow are very difficult to follow as well. Almost all guidelines for women, although excessive, can be achieved through an investment whether it's money, hard work, or both. A crippling requirement for men is height. There is no safe way to surgically make a man taller, nor will exercise or diet have much of an impact either. Men and women both are labeled and treated differently due to their physical appearances. As I stated, men have many beauty standards just as difficult as those for women, but women are more strictly held to their standards. With women's studies it is important to see both sides of any story or argument, and the beauty standards for men are often ignored when women fight their own unfair standards. I certainly concede that it is more difficult and monitored for women, but every voice must be heard for equality.

  1. I agree that men and women have expectations as a physical appearance, but women are held more accountable for it. I think this happens because women are the ones who are expected to find the guy and be married by a certain age and has more pressure to follow this track. One the other side, men don't have to follow a certain track and won't be asked as many questions if they do something different.
