It pretty cool that we have the same name, but aside from that, Ellen Page just spoke at the Time to THRIVE conference. She gave a really touching speech that concluded with her "coming out speech." She spoke about how affected she was by the standards Hollywood put on her. She also spoke about how hiding who she really was had a very damaging effect on her and her relationships. A reporter recently commented on a picture of her wearing sweats on the way to the gym saying, why does someone so petite and feminine choose to dress like a large man. She was like, "um, I like to be comfortable." She went on to talk about our societies destructive dichotomist views on gender. I was very touched by her speech, and I think it is definitely worth watching.

I was so excited when I heard about this! Whenever a famous or well-respected person has the bravery to defy societal norms and come out like this, I think they are paving the way for other's to take that courageous step. I already loved Ellen Page as an actress. Now I admire her as such a courageous, inspirational woman.
ReplyDeleteI think she is very inspirational woman and definitely have more respect for her after this speech.
ReplyDeleteYeah, that was an awesome speech. She made some awesome genuine points. I especially loved when she pointed out that social norms really serve no one, not the "majority", "minority", etc. It's obvious but people needed to be reminded of that sometimes
ReplyDeleteLOVE this! so much respect for ellen page now!
