In class on Thursday, I brought up how PROMO and the American Civil Liberties Union of Missouri have begun their march in order to achieve marriage equality in Missouri. More specifically, they are working with eight gay couples who have been married in other jurisdictions, yet their marriage is not recognized in Missouri. For example, if a gay couple were to get married in Illinois, their marriage would not be legally recognized in Missouri, inhibiting a number of their rights that a straight couple would receive.
The particular link that I attached to this blog post is about same-sex marriage in Utah. Similar to Missouri, they have had a very difficult battle in achieving marriage equality with it being legalized one day to it being declared legal now far after. The thing that I love about this Buzzfeed article is that it tells such fantastic narrative of what is going on. One thing that really stood out to me was how they remarked, "Kitchen was 15 when Utah voters overwhelmingly voted to enact the marriage ban, Amendment 3, in 2004. He remembers being a freshman in high school and seeing neighbors - even friends - post signs in their yards supporting the ban." People say we live in a post-racial, post-sexist, post-etc. society, but I think this is proof that our society still has a lot of advancing to do in terms of equal rights and human rights. Just 10 years ago, same-sex marriage was being condemned in well over half of the United States. Only one state, Massachusetts, legalized same-sex marriage. Although we have definitely come a long way with 17 states and Washington DC allowing same-sex marriage, I think this goes to show how far our society has to come before it is a post-anything society.
