I just watched this movie on Netflix called “syrup” it was
about a male and female in the marketing industry in New York. I don’t want to
give away too much of the plot because it was pretty interesting, so ill leave
it at that but I do want to talk about how the female was portrayed through out
the movie. She was the sexiest businesswoman I have ever seen and wore these
very tight dresses that I thought would never be acceptable in the business
world and always wore red lipstick. It was infuriating because she explained
her style as her “image” and as a marketer, her image was everything and she
knew that if she wanted to make it to the top, she had to “sell herself”. This is
where I get angry because I am studying business and this will be me one day
and in order for me to succeed I’m going to have to be the hottest girl in the
office? Even then the actress still didn’t get the respect she deserved. In the
movie she launches a campaign and the male dominated board of the company went
with the male campaign option because he was a male.
It really upset me because in the beginning of the movie she
was this awesome, head of marketing expert and I thought “what a badass, that
is going to be me one day” and then she gets totally shot down. It really makes
me worry about what is going to happen once I graduate. Overall, the movie was
pretty cool but made me question my future career.
I think there are so many ways to "sell oneself," and I do not think her physical appearance was the correct route. At the same time, could she have even made it if she sold herself in the correct way, like by doing her job, completing projects, making presentations, etc? Was she playing into our patriarchal society or was that the only chance she had to make it into the male-oriented business world? This movie sounds very interesting!
ReplyDeletei really see your point, but then i wonder aren't men selling themselves to? I feel like selling yourself is important but i dont think someone needs to focus on their sex, i think it should just focus on someone looking business ready and well groomed.
ReplyDeleteInteresting will check this movie out. thanks.
