Netflix did all single people a
great service, no they didn't find them all significant others, they released
House of Cards season 2. This thrilling political drama is a day in the life of
fictional and newly appointed Vice President Frank Underwood played by Kevin
Spacey. There were two things that really caught my eye, first is rape that
Underwood’s wife experienced during her freshman year of college. The man who
raped her ended up being a general that needed to be pinned by her husband and
Frank was absolutely livid when he found out, Claire later ended up telling him
further details to reveal the whole thing. I thought that the writers and
producers did a great job to get this type of issue in the spotlight; although
it’s not a huge plot point it does show that there is a problem even when
Claire was in college. It shows that times haven’t changed as much as we think
they have. The second thing I liked, that was related to this class was
Underwood wanting and basically ensuring that a woman will follow him up as the
Democratic majority whip. It shows that woman can be in a place of power as we've
seen with real life example Nancy Pelosi. Overall, House of Cards has done a good job of showing some feminist points. It also doesn't hurt that Underwood's wife, Claire is a very strong female lead.
House of Cards is one of my favorite shows, and I love how strong the women in this show are. This women in the show are portrayed as multi-dimensional and don't fall the normal stereotypical characters that over run most TV shows.
ReplyDeleteI love this show so much. I am so glad you posted about it. I think that the strong female leads in this show are great and they really inspire me because I want to be in politics one day and it helps to show me that politics isn't only a mans world and that it is possible to make a change in the political system as a woman.
ReplyDeleteI'm happy you posted about this show because I love it, and have been thinking a lot about its women characters. I think the writers and directors do an amazing job at subtly commenting on the gender roles in the power structure of the government, and how it influences the public (and vice versa)
ReplyDeleteFinished the season a few days after it came out. The way women are represented is fantastic in the show. The show has had some of the best roles for multiple women that I have seen in quite a while.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see the show narrated from Claire's perspective actually. I love Frank's dark humor and ironic glances to the camera, but Claire has a lot of character that could be fleshed out more.
