Young Women in Business

I was out of town this weekend for business training and I noticed the skewed gender ratio. One thing to note, the women that have the same job as me will not in any way receive less money than me based on gender from my company. We all run franchises and the 3 girls will work with the same royalties, insurance charges, etc. as the 15 males or so. However when swapping stories about doing door to door marketing, the girls seemed to have a higher likelihood of people answering the door with an open attitude, but it sounded like the men may have had a higher chance to actually sell the job. On the official level, my company gives all genders and races equal opportunity, however at a more subconscious level the customers may not.

  1. I am not so sure about the pay because it is taught not to tell coworkers how much make. So even if they did tell you a number it could always be lesser or higher depending on how much they think you make as a male. As discussed in class this week I think it taught to women not open the doors for male strangers so women are more open to answer the door for females even when they don't know them because their is no perceived threat.

  2. Interesting post because I am studying to eventually be a female in the business world. Im glad your company is not biased against women but it still troubles me that the customer may not look at them the same way they would a man. I contemplate the struggles I will have once I graduate and i never considered the customer being an issue. Great post!

  3. I do agree that some companies don't discriminate between gender, however, statistics have shown that companies tend to pay depending on the male. In this case, I agree families tend to answer the doors for female because they are suppose to be not dangerous, while males are usually stereotyped as "dangerous" and won't be approached the same way. It depends on what you do and who you work for in order to have equal pay in the business world.
