Queen B

I’ve added a link here to an article pertaining to Beyoncé and how she isn’t a feminist. It is interesting because so often Beyoncé is looked upon as this role model for strong woman and the article even says “Beyoncé has managed to remain above the fray and become the most prominent feminist icon of the new millennia.” I think it’s so easy for people to put her in the category of a feminist, but she has never come out and said she is a feminist. Now people are getting upset with her because her album is titled Mrs. Carter and some of the lyrics in her song with Jay-Z talk about abuse and Jay-Z makes it seem like he is okay with that. From one side I feel like it isn’t fair for people to be getting upset about this because she has never said she is a feminist but on the other side, I do think she has a very strong voice that many people of this generation listen to and respect, so if she is going to talk abut being a strong woman and “putting a ring on it” it isn’t fair for her to excuse her actions as she never said she was a feminist. She has a lot of influence and because of that she needs to think before she acts on things. What are other people’s thoughts?

  1. I think that this is an interesting issue. On the one hand, Lady B is entitled to her own views and lifestyle choices, but the fact that she is a strong, empowered, confident woman who doesn't like to think of herself as a feminist isn't doing any favors for the movement itself. Her public support of the feminist movement would go a long way in breaking down some of the harmful stigmas about feminism.

  2. I find it really interesting that in that article, the author chooses to focus on the "bow down, bitches" part of the song. In the middle of that same song there is an interlude concluding with this quote. "Feminist: the person who believes in the social
Political, and economic equality of the sexes." I have a hard time believing she would put that in one of her songs if she wasn't a feminist.
