Gendered Products

http://www.buzzfeed.com/erinchack/pointlessly-gendered-products

I know we already discussed in class the pens that are on this list, but I thought that this list was a really comical look at just how ridiculous the gendering of products has become. One of favorite on this list are the tissues that are “man-size”. I think that this works well with what we talked about in class last week. As a woman who’s as tall if not taller than most guys I think it’s funny that women being petite and dainty, and men being the physically dominant sex is such a culturally reinforced stereotype that it affects our Kleenex size.  I think that product gendering is one of those things that is small, but has much broader implications. It reinforces that women can’t do or have everything that men can and vice versa. In my gender communication class we had a discussion, about gendered bathroom products and several of the guys admitted to preferring the nice smelling women’s shampoo, body wash, etc. I think it’s kind of ridiculous that if a guy wants to use vanilla scented lotion he feels pressured against it.

  1. WOW! This was such an astonishing article. It is amazing that things like this exist in our society. And for most of these it's not just a pink or blue distinction. It actually says for "her" or "him"
